Nonsurgical spinal decompression is an extremely effective conservative treatment for low back pain. At Move Better Chiropractic we use it to treat:

  • Low back pain
  • Degenerative Disc changes
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Herniated Discs and
  • Sciatica or sciatic pain
  • Annular fiber pain generators

Nonsurgical decompression reverses changes in our intervertebral discs that can occur for a variety of reasons. Using a specialized treatment table, a negative pressure is created in the disc through gentle axial distraction. In the case of a herniated disc, the distraction pulls the extruded material back into the center of the disc and reducing the physical compression at the spinal nerve roots. Furthermore, patients choosing to have Non-surgical Spinal Decompression will experience rehydration through this same system of negative pressure that can aid in the relief and reduce the symptoms of compressed nerves. Some post-surgical patients are even candidates, so having surgery does not exclude one from the potential of being a patient.

There are three phases of the Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Procedure at Move Better Chiropractic

Phase I: Relief

As a general rule, most patients experience significant changes in symptoms within the first three to eight Spinal Decompression procedures. Occasionally, a more advanced degenerative condition or multiple level herniated discs may take 10-15 sessions before realizing a major decline in symptoms at Move Better Chiropractic. Also, some patients appear to have rapid relief after the first treatment. Relief response varies according to age, body morphology and degree of severity.

Phase II: Correction

As strength is regained in the lumbar spine, circulation is restored to the damaged disc, and the healing begins. Correction implies that the progressive process that led to the painful episode has been slowed, stopped or reversed. This corrective process occurs simultaneously with symptom relief. This is often the most exciting moment for patients at Move Better Chiropractic.

Phase III: Strengthening

The process that leads to most low back pain (mechanical spinal pathology) involves destabilization of the support structures, degeneration and ultimately re-stabilization. This process usually occurs because a faulty movement pattern has been repeated for thousands of cycles, eventually leading to significant injury. The Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression procedure quickly reintroduces kinetic activity to the joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments to help you regain back strength, proprioception, and restore lost lumbar stability. Simultaneously we begin to treat the root cause of what created the symptoms in the first place, faulty movement mechanics. Faulty patterns are replaced with patterns that the human body is designed to sustain over time and with a repeated load. This pattern is repeated every treatment as soon as possible and then placed under load when appropriate to make sure the body begins to own and adapts to these patterns. Our very clear goal is to replace faulty patterns with new patterns that have enough surplus of strength that it is very difficult to injure that area again. This is the most crucial step in our procedure, and where Move Better excels above other treatments and physical therapy institutions.
